SUMMER EXPLORATORY CAMPS

Students who will be in grades 7-12 have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills relating to future course offerings and career opportunities are encouraged to register for MCHS Summer Exploratory Camps. Camps meet Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during the weeks of June 4th and June 11th. The cost of each camp is $40 and transportation will be available. Camp offerings include Introduction to Small Gas Engines and Auto (7th-9th grade), Introduction to Welding (7th-9th grade), Information Technology (9th-10th grade), 3D for Everyone-Architecture & Design (7th-9th grade) and Adventures in Photography (9th-12th grade). MCHS CAREER AND TRANSITION STUDENTS

The MCHS Career and Transition team competed in their first community basketball game this month. The Marengo Indians traveled to Woodstock to face the SEDOM Panthers in an exhibition game that was heavily contested throughout the first half. The Indians began to pull away in the 2nd half with team defense and unselfish play on offense. Marengo took advantage of several fast break opportunities and crashed the boards for a significant rebounding edge. The Marengo Indians pulled in their first victory with a 22-12 win over the SEDOM Panthers. Both sides displayed excellent sportsmanship in front of a crowd of students who cheered them on. »

TEACHERS TAKE TO THE CLASSROOMS

With the 1-1 Digital Learning Initiative implementation, MCHS teachers spent February 17, 2012, learning from each other. Currently, ten MCHS teacher are piloting netbooks in their classroom. On our February Teacher Institute Day, the Digital Learning Teachers ‘taught’ their peers how to use the various technologies to enhance their teaching methods. MCHS staff members presented on Google Apps, Sites and Docs along with Edmodo, Animoto, Youtube, Juno, Zamzar, Testmoz, Crocodoc, Evernote, and Popplet. »

CHESS TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to the Marengo Community High School Chess Team. This past weekend they earned the title of ICCA Division 1A State Champions, the first-ever State Chess title for MCHS. The team fought their way through 7 rounds of chess Friday and Saturday, February 10th and 11th at the Peoria Civic Center. They won four matches and earned 48.2 Tie-Break points to finish at the top of the Division 1A schools in Illinois.

Head Coach Erik Czerwin was honored as the Illinois Chess Coaches Association 2012 Coach of the Year, having been elected from a group of 6 highly qualified coaches from throughout Illinois. »

MUSIC DEPARTMENT HOSTS ANNUAL PASTA DINNER

The MCHS Music Department would like to invite everyone to our annual Pasta Dinner on Saturday, March 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the commons. Come any time you want to listen to the various bands and choirs performing a special Pops concert, featuring music from movies and musicals! READING CLUB TAKES VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP

On Thursday, February 9th, the MCHS Reading Club took a virtual field trip to NIU. Cory Doctorow, author of Little Brother, gave a presentation at NIU as part of STEMfest, which “celebrates innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).” »

MCHS MUSIC DEPARTMENT REPRESENTED IN HONORS GROUPS

The MCHS Music Department had outstanding participation in the Big Northern Conference Honors Band and Choir Festival on Monday, January 23rd. Six vocal students including Brittany Christensen, Danielle Rupe, Caitlin Tierney, Becky Brosch, Stephanie Voller, and Bill Tengler and seven band students including Jake Anthony, Dona Lorenz, Elizabeth Dujmovich, Jake Temple, Lydia LaGue, Payton Meyers, and Mike Weas attended the festival. Students worked with renowned directors throughout the day and performed in a mass band and choir concert that evening. This is a wonderful experience for our students and we are thrilled that the BNC offers this opportunity.

In addition, the MCHS Band participated in another honors group, the McHenry County Honor Band, which is made up of the best musicians of each high school in the county. The students worked with legendary Colin Clarke of the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra over the course of three days, culminating with a concert on Saturday, January 21. Jake Anthony, Jake Hart, Allyson Munneke, Elizabeth Dujmovich, Ben Schwartz, Mike Weas, and Erik Eeg were selected by the various band directors from across county. Great job to all the students involved in these amazing concerts! »

MCHS CHESS TEAM IS STATE-BOUND

The MCHS Chess Team is State-bound. They took first place in the conference during the competitive season, and are looking for a first place finish at the conference tournament on January 28th. The team is well positioned to take first place in the Division at the IHSA State Chess Team tournament on February 10th and 11th.

Also, all students are invited to attend and participate in the MCHS Grandmaster Challenge on Saturday, February 25th. Registration is FREE this year for the first time. Tell your student to stop by and register with Mr. Czerwin in Room 2508 for a fun-filled day of chess competition, camaraderie, and prizes. Prizes will include chess equipment, gift cards, and locally donated gifts. Everyone will play, and everyone will have a great time, guaranteed. »

SKILLSUSA

SkillsUSA students will be taking qualification exams on February 24th. If they score well, they will advance to the state championships held April 26th-28th. Those that place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd win scholarships and tools. First place advances to the National Championships. This year’s subject areas to be tested by Marengo students are Auto Service, Auto Body Refinishing, Architectural Drafting, Mechanical Drafting, and Culinary Arts. PROSTART

Three students are going to defend the Illinois State Championship Prostart 1st place trophy. They are: Luke Keenum, Chris Gigiano, and Chris Felde. They have been practicing their knife cuts, chicken fabrication, and three course meals twice a week. The competition takes place on February 25th, 2012 in Chicago. Good luck, guys! »

SENIOR NIGHT

The Homer's Homies were in the house for the girl's final home basketball game on February 3, 2012. The Homies came dressed in their senior citizen attire in honor of "Senior Night." The girls won against Burlington Central with a score of 53-33, giving them a share of the conference championship. Thanks, Homie's, for all your support. »
