ROGER CANNON NAMED IBCA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE We are proud to announce that longtime MCHS coach Roger Cannon will be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on May 3, 2025, at their annual banquet. Coach Cannon arrived at MCHS in 1970 where he was an assistant coach for Homer “Bill” Barry for 27 years. Coach Cannon took over the head coaching duties of the Indians in 1997 and was head coach for three seasons. He was 79-16 during those three seasons and won two regional championships and one sectional championship along with 3 conference championships. We will be recognizing and celebrating his induction on Friday, January 17th during the FNBO Challenge with Harvard. While assisting Coach Barry, Coach Cannon helped the program win 552 games with 16 regional championships, four sectional championships, one super-sectional championship and a trip to the state finals in 1989-90 school year. During these 27 years, MCHS won 11 conference championships as well. Coach Cannon stated, “Coach Barry had a huge influence on me and was an outstanding mentor and friend. This is quite the honor. We had so much fun, especially with assistant coach Ron Traven.” Coach Cannon attributed MCHS Basketball success to great players that worked hard. Coach Cannon remembers MCHS great Ken Dunek. Dunek is a 1976 graduate of MCHS. Coach Cannon said “Ken Dunek was one of the greats. He played basketball here at MCHS then went on to play football for the Philadelphia Eagles. He and his teammates really got this basketball program rolling.” Current MCHS Head Boys Basketball Coach Jeremy Burke stated, “Coach Cannon was a huge influence on me to get into coaching as the way he coached and interacted with students and his knowledge for the game was exemplary. Playing for him was an honor and we are so proud of him and his accomplishments; very well deserved.” Former MCHS basketball player, basketball coach, and AD and current teacher and golf coach Chad Olson said, “I have the utmost respect for Coach Cannon for teaching me how to be a better player. I admire Coach for his loyalty and leadership that he gave to his teams, students and community. I am grateful for having him as my coach and having such a positive impact on my life.” Coach Cannon started his love for basketball while playing high school ball at Neponset high school. Cannon is the all-time leading scorer for the Zephyrs. The Cannon sure-shot scored 1,809 points as a four-year starter for the Zephyrs (1962-66). Coach Cannon was inducted into the Bureau County Hall of Fame as well. Coach Cannon said “Being inducted into the Bureau County Hall of Fame is something very special and a huge achievement of mine. I have been very fortunate to be around a group of great players in high school.” Coach Cannon mentioned the importance of having a very supportive wife and family. He could not have coached that many years without the love and support he received at home. Coach Cannon said, “I was blessed to have a wonderful wife, Sherry, and loving children as I was gone many hours of the day and evenings away coaching.” Coach Cannon received his under-graduate degree from Eastern Illinois University. Coach Cannon still lives in Marengo where he is happily retired from teaching. He still attends most basketball games and other sporting events at MCHS.
